Today, May 5th, I was planning to be a part of your Celebration of Life in Tucson. An opportunity to share what you have meant to me and my boys for 39 years.
Sadly I could not be there due to another friend's untimely passing.
From 1959 - 2024 you, NY friend lived an amazing life! I knew you for 39 of those years. Your "-"...the dash was filled with great achievements according to the world's standards. But more importantly I want to share how that "dash" impacted the life of my family.
I met Bruce in 1985 while working as a secretary at Hamilton Test Systems in Tucson. We formed a unique friendship based upon our ability to banter back and forth. Such an extremely intelligent man Bruce never made me feel less, but rather embraced my strengths as a mother, a musician and we spent many hours, days, and years in a timeless friendship.
We both had a fascination of seeing life and enjoying simple moments, and Bruce quickly became my "plus 1" or "go to" guy. My parents loved him and appreciated that he was not only there for me but for my son, Christian Evans and Stephan Evans.
If I needed to move. Bruce Kohn was on hand. If my car was having issues, Bruce was on hand.
Our love for music was a strong bond and we would spend many hours just singing...him on the guitar piano, or me on the piano. We sang EVERYTHING and everywhere unhindered, unembarassed and LAUGHED...a lot
We were banned from going to Dairy Queen for lunch when we worked together because we were too silly after ice cream...and our obsession with elevators.
Bruce saw me at my best and stood with me through some of the darkest moments of my life. And remained a good friend, always seeing the best in me. He became the ideal role model for my young sons, helping me to guide them in the right direction by his influence.
In the second decade of our friendship we began collaborating on writing original songs; I wrote the words and he wrote the music. A lasting memory forever
One of my sons best memory is when, after YEARS of him asking, I let Bruce take us up in in his airplane. Exciting to fly over Tucson, they had a moment of panic when suddenly Bruce gave me control of the aircraft. Just for a few seconds! Not a great idea, but he had it, just as he always had my back.
I loved hearing about his achievements, his chances for traveling for his job. But the greatest joy was when he called to tell me he had FINALLY fallen in love. I was so happy for him because I knew that woman was going to be so blessed in that relationship. When I called to tell him that I had also found the man of my dreams, his happiness for me was wonderful, and only surpassed when he shared the news that he was going to be a dad.
My only regret is that he and I never got to meet the two people in our lives with each other.
Bruce and I had years of talking about faith and science and we both respected each other's view. When he called me to share the news of his cancer diagnosis and prognosis, I told him I would pray for him. He simply replied, "I know." And I did. Our calls became less frequent but I kept praying.
My life was especially enriched by our friendship...our relationship. I know Bruce impacted many lives along his lifetime, and this world was definitely a brighter place because of him.
I was fortunate to call him my friend.

Sending out heartfelt condolences to Bruce's family and friends. Bruce's son is good friends with my son, so for the past several years I've gotten to know Bruce and consider him a friend. He was always kind and outgoing, and I always enjoyed my conversations with him. He was always so inquisitive and eager to engage in discussions about all kinds of fascinating stuff. In particular, whenever we would talk about anything aviation-related his eyes would light up and we would talk for what seemed like hours on end. I hope that Bruce's child-like curiosity carries forward with Austin, it will serve him well throughout his life. I still have several Ted Talks and books that Bruce has recommended to listen to and read! I will miss him.

My dear friend Bruce:
I feel real pain, and I can’t comprehend yet that you have passed on. You have been such a constant force in the last 20 years of my life that it’s difficult to understand.
What a friend have you been to me! So full of admiration for me that I always felt it is undeserved. So interested in my well-being, my professional development and in the people around me. And you always remembered all details of our earlier conversations that I felt embarrassed for not remembering them equally.
Instead, you are the one to admire, you have so many talents it’s difficult to list them all. You were blessed with playing several instruments well, not needing notes, and with such a profound knowledge of the theory of music.
There was hardly a topic you weren’t a real expert in: for example, flying your Mooney until you no longer could. When we met, we often talked about both, philosophical and psychological topics where I learned so much from you. I remember during our last encounter you were telling me a few detailed questions to ask of my daughter Lorena (who’s doing her residence in psychiatry) that I had to write them down.
I have always told people that my friend Bruce is the most intelligent person I’ve ever met. It was so obvious. However, to tell you a secret, in part I admired your intelligence so much, hoping that some of it one day may rub off.
Most important though has been your warmth and your caring personality that came across every time we met or talked on the phone. My visits over the past few months with you have been very intense emotionally – you have cried a lot. You had become so fragile physically, though your mind was sharp as always. Now it’s me who’s crying for you. The worry you expressed about Laryssa’s, Austin’s, and also Vlad’s future without you was so painful to listen to.
I miss you, Bruce. We both know that I owe you a tremendous amount of gratitude, as, what business success I may have had in life, a large part of it I owe it to you.
Goodbye my dear friend – I know that our friendship will continue forever.
Lothar

This amazing man was my friend. A role model to my sons growing up, teaching them how to be men of integrity.
We spent quite a few years playing music and singing together...even collaborating on a selection of songs together. Our repertoire ranged from Peter, Paul and Mary, Elton John, the Indigo Girls and Kenny Loggins. But also we lived to sing songs from Les Miserable' and Phantom. We were big fans of Andrew Lloyd Weber.
We met while working at Hamilton Test Systems in the mid 80's, and we became the bestest of friends. We had a fondness for riding elevators, jazz music and just being silly together. My sons. Christian Evans and Stephan ( Chrissy Bruening ) grew up in their formulative years seeing what a healthy friendship looked liked.
Over the years we stayed in touch, sometimes reminiscent of past experiences we shared. Bruce saw me through some of the most difficult times in my life and stood by me as my friend, loyal, never judgemental.
Bruce was an important part in my children's lives and I regret he never got to meet my husband Josh or to see my sons for the men they grew into.
I remember how excited he was when he shared with me he had fallen in love, married and then to become a father! I was glad he had found the happiness he deserved.
I shall miss my friend but he will live forever in my heart...in my thoughts.

This is so true - "Bruce found love and true happiness marrying Larysa and becoming a father later in life." Bruce talked about his earlier life fondly, but it was clear that it was his later life that he enjoyed most, and considered himself so lucky, after waiting so long, to be blessed with such a wonderful wife and child. My heart breaks for them both. I know that Austin will eventually be okay, in part, because he has been lucky enough to have had 12 years of love and guidance from such a dedicated father. Austin will see that Bruce lives on through him every time he looks in the mirror...
I will so miss Bruce's sense of humor, enthusiasm for life, and interesting take on the world... He was taken way way to soon.
